We have heard many complaints about “diversity” at the Oscars (but, of course, not so much about the generally crappy quality of films today). I assume this is because people hold out hope for perfect “diversity” but have taken a realistic approach to film quality, knowing that artistry and creativity are all but dead but neo-Marxism of “social justice” is alive and well. I am not here to debate the merits of “diversity” vis a vis paying attention to the actual films and not the identity of those who made it. We are assuming that the drumbeat for diversity will continue as the quality of film decreases, and we are offering the only real solution to the “diversity” issue: requiring diversity in the nominations (and the results) according to an agreed formula.
As long as we permit the nominees to be based upon the quality of the films themselves, and not the identity of the filmmaker, it will be impossible to achieve true diversity in the nominating process, as the results will always be uncertain and uneven as to who does and does not win.
We therefore propose:
There will be a total of ten nominations for best director, with half reserved for each sex. One might also consider having nine nominees total, this being a total of four of each sex and one for transgendered, non-binary, or other persons. The same should be true for Best Picture, with the majority of the sex of the Producers nominated being used to determine whether the Best Picture should be considered a male or female (or transgendered) nominee.
This formula may likewise be used for Best Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Animated Film.
However, given the complexity of determining the gender and/or sex of who should be counted in terms of producing the Best Foreign Language films, and the fact that many countries may not include women in film-making, this quota system, we mean “equity system,” will have to be phased in for Best Foreign Language Film.
More importantly, we need to enforce gender and/or sexual parity in terms of the actual winners and not the just nominees. If males should win any of these major categories for three years in a row, then the following year the number of female nominees will increase by two and the number of males decreased by this same number. This reduction will continue until we have a female winner.
However, racial diversity may be imposed immediately. All major acting categories should be expanded to ten nominees, with the following quotas suggested: four nominees must be Jewish or European Americans, three must Hispanic, two must be African-American, and one must be Asian or Pacific Islander. If we wish to increase African-American participation to three persons out of ten, then the number of Jewish or European Americans nominated may be reduced to three.
There will no attempt to impose ideological diversity, and no participation by political conservatives will be permitted, we mean, required.
Likewise, religious diversity will not be enforced, and the entire slate of candidates may be hostile to religion, if not avowed atheists. No participation by Christians will be permitted, we mean, required.
